"Visualizing" Health Risks and Real-world Application
Our laboratory conducts interdisciplinary research to address human health challenges, building on a foundation of infectious disease epidemiology, health sciences, and social medicine.
By combining mathematical modeling, sensing technologies, and real-world epidemiological data, we strive to quantify health risks that were previously difficult to assess. Ultimately, our goal is to translate these insights into evidence-informed policies, public health practice, and real-world implementation.
Research Focus
01 | Contact, Behavior, and Spatial Measurement
We measure contact, movement, and spatial behavior using technologies such as ultra-wideband (UWB) positioning and other real-world data sources to understand how patterns of interaction relate to health risks.
02 | Real-World Epidemiology and Health Risk Dynamics
We use epidemiological, statistical, and mathematical approaches to understand how health risks emerge, change, and spread across populations and real-world settings.
03 | Preferences, Decision-Making, and Choice Environments
We examine how information, costs, compensation, support, and institutional conditions shape health-related preferences and decisions—and how environments can enable safer and more feasible choices.
04 | Infection Control, Implementation Science, and Service Design
We translate evidence into practical infection-control strategies, services, and implementation approaches, evaluating their effectiveness, burden, and sustainability in real-world settings.

Kyoto University
Kenji Mizumoto is a physician and epidemiologist whose career has spanned clinical medicine, public health administration, and academic research in Japan and the United States.
His research focuses on measuring and understanding health risks in real-world settings and translating evidence into practical decisions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he also contributed to public health responses at the national and local-government levels in Japan.
From Evidence to Practice
Our research begins with real-world problems and aims to return evidence to the settings where decisions are made.
We work across disciplines and collaborate with healthcare, public health, educational, long-term care, community, and other partners to identify problems, generate evidence, support decisions, and evaluate implementation.
